During the Revolution (1944–1950) he worked as an artist-reporter for the newspaper *Patriot* under the editorship of Usmar Ismail, making documentary drawings and sketches of the independence struggle, and in 1946 became a member of Pelukis Rakyat (\"the People's Painters\"). His concern with the suffering of ordinary people dates from these years, and never left the work.\n\nIn 1950 he became the first Indonesian artist sent to Europe on the Cultural Exchange Program, studying painting and sculpture in Holland and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. From 1952 to 1955 he trained at the Art Students League in New York — painting under Yasuo Kuniyoshi, graphics under Harry Sternberg and Will Barnet — and was made a Lifetime Member of the League in 1970. He studied mural technique in Mexico City (1962–63); in 1964 UNICEF chose his woodcut *Homeward* for its worldwide Christmas card, the first Indonesian artist so honoured; in 1966 he painted a mural for the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague; and from 1968 to 1973 he ran his own Sudjana Galleries in Mt. Kisco and North Salem, New York, teaching drawing, painting and batik.\n\nIn 1976 Kerton came home. On Dago Hill in Bandung, in the foothills of Mt.
