Numbers were assigned when the works were first catalogued and never change, so the prefix is NOT a reliable guide to the medium — read the Classification and Medium lines. Cite works by number and link to their entry page. - Inclusion in this catalogue is a scholarly cataloguing decision. It does not constitute an authentication or a guarantee of authenticity, attribution, or provenance, and the catalogue does not provide valuations. - The catalogue records no prices or valuations, ever. Market events are noted without figures. - "Unrecorded" means the catalogue does not yet have the fact — not that it does not exist. Do not infer or invent dates, media or dimensions. - Images are © the Kerton estate and reproduced by permission; do not reuse them without the estate's permission (kertonart.com). - Place, date and dimensions come from the estate's own captions and are given as captioned (the captions do not give height and width in a consistent order). ## Quick facts - Name: Sudjana Kerton (also written S. Kerton) - Born: 22 November 1922, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia - Died: 6 April 1994, Bandung, aged 71 - Nationality: Indonesian - Studio-gallery: Sanggar Luhur, Dago Hill, Bandung (built after his 1976 return) - Works catalogued here: 87 (57 paintings, 15 prints, 15 works on paper); 19 recorded as stolen in 1997 - Primary sources: the estate biodata (kertonart.com, "Biodata on Sudjana Kerton (1922–1994)") and the estate website kertonart.com ## Sudjana Kerton (1922–1994) Sudjana Kerton (born Bandung, West Java, 22 November 1922; died Bandung, 6 April 1994) was an Indonesian painter whose half-century career runs from the drawings he made as an artist-reporter of the Indonesian Revolution, through Amsterdam, Paris, New York and Mexico, to the crowded, humorous canvases of everyday West-Javanese life he painted after coming home to Bandung in 1976. Largely self-taught, he began in Bandung painting portraits and still lifes. His first guide was his cousin Kendar Kerton, seven years his senior; when Kendar was dying of tuberculosis in 1939 he asked Sudjana to carry on his work, and from then on Sudjana signed his paintings "S. Kerton" in his memory (Astri Wright, *The Jakarta Post*, 1994 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/sudjana-kerton-recorded-history-of-modern-indonesia-1447893297)). He also learned from European painters working in Bandung — the estate names Jos Pluimentz, Ries Mulder and Henk de Vos — and during the Japanese occupation exhibited with the young Indonesian painters who gathered at the Keimin Bunka Shidōsho cultural centre in Bandung and Jakarta. Through the Revolution he was an artist-reporter for *Patriot*, the paper edited by Usmar Ismail, drawing events as they happened — among them Soekarno speaking at Cirebon on 23 May 1947 and the handover of military authority in Bandung in 1949 (Carla Bianpoen, *The Jakarta Post*, 2001 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/sudjana-kertons-virtues-exposed-1447893297)). In January 1947 an exhibition in Yogyakarta of forty-one revolution paintings by Kerton, Barli and Kustiwa earned the three the name "revolutiemeesters", masters of the revolution (*Arnhemsche Courant*, 21 January 1947 (http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=MMKB08:000112463:mpeg21:a0021:ocr)). President Soekarno acquired work from these years; most of the rest was destroyed when Dutch forces took Yogyakarta in December 1948, while Kerton was away sketching on Timor. In January 1950, invited by the Dutch cultural foundation Sticusa, he left for the Netherlands with some thirty paintings and 250 watercolours (*Java-bode*, 3 January 1950 (http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010865657:mpeg21:a0128:ocr)) — among the first Indonesian artists to go to Europe on a cultural exchange. He worked in Amsterdam and Paris, where the estate records that he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and in 1951 the Stedelijk Museum bought his watercolour *Weg naar Versailles* (*Nieuwe Courant*, 20 April 1951 (http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=MMNIOD04:000093460:mpeg21:a0081:ocr)). By the autumn of 1951 he was in New York on a scholarship to the Art Students League, studying painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and printmaking with Harry Sternberg and Will Barnet. In 1953 he married Louise, an American nurse; they had three children, the eldest their daughter Tjandra. New York was his base for a quarter of a century. He held a solo exhibition at the Monede Gallery on Madison Avenue in 1960, and in the summer of 1962, after Affandi visited him and the two painted together — *Affandi Eating Watermelon*, now among the stolen works, dates from that day — he followed Affandi to Mexico, where he spent about a year studying mural painting (Amir Sidharta, *The Jakarta Post*, 1997 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/stolen-paintings-reflect-kertons-career-1447893297)); the Mexican palette transformed his colour. In 1964 UNICEF chose his woodcut *Homeward* (1956) for the Christmas cards it sold worldwide — by the estate's account the first Indonesian artist so honoured — and that year he made his first visit home. In 1966 he was commissioned to paint a mural, *Tanah Airku – My Country*, for the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, and from 1968 to 1973 he ran his own Sudjana Galleries in Mt. Kisco and North Salem, New York, teaching drawing, painting and batik. In 1976 Kerton came home. On a bare hilltop at Bukit Pakar, Dago Atas, above Bandung — within sight of Tangkuban Prahu, Mount Manglayang and the Malabar hills — he built the studio and home he called Sanggar Luhur, and entered what the estate calls "arguably, the most outstanding and prolific period of his career": street vendors and becak ranks, jamu sellers and market crowds, wayang golek and Sundanese weddings, observed with humour and a caricaturist's eye. "I am part of every subject I paint … This is why I paint from memory, to be able to express my inner feelings more clearly," he wrote (kertonart.com (https://www.kertonart.com/)). He held solo exhibitions in Jakarta — at Taman Ismail Marzuki (1980, 1985), Balai Budaya (1984) and Erasmus Huis (1988) — published *Tanah Airku – My Country, Indonesia* (1990) with Louise, and in 1993 was shown at the first Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane. He died in Bandung on 6 April 1994. His work is held by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery of Indonesia and Museum MACAN, among others. Since his death the family, from Sanggar Luhur, has kept his record and his work before the public: the retrospective *Nasionalisme dan Perubahannya* (Jakarta, 1996); *The Revolution & Evolution of Sudjana Kerton* (Museum Benteng Vredeburg, Yogyakarta, 1999), curated by M. Dwi Marianto of ISI Yogyakarta (*The Jakarta Post*, 1999 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/kertons-images-of-historic-yogyakarta-1447893297)); *The Lone Wolf* (Honolulu Academy of Arts, 2006–07); and *The Hidden Treasures of Sudjana Kerton* (Art:1 New Museum, Jakarta, 2025). On 2 February 1997 nineteen of his paintings were stolen from the family's gallery in Bandung; this catalogue keeps a public register of them. *This biography rests on the estate's biodata and kertonart.com, corroborated and dated from contemporary sources — Dutch newspapers of 1947–51, The Jakarta Post (Astri Wright, Amir Sidharta, Carla Bianpoen) and Kompas. Contemporary sources confirm most of it, date much of it more precisely, and in a few places read differently. They are set out here as questions for the estate and for future research, not as corrections of the family's record. - **Keimin Bunka Shidōsho.** The biodata places his group shows there in 1940–43; the Japanese cultural centre opened in April 1943 (source (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keimin_Bunka_Shid%C5%8Dsho)), so the shows fall in 1943–45, as kertonart.com's own dating (1942–45) suggests. - **His teachers.** The biodata dates his work with Jos Pluimentz, Ries Mulder and Henk de Vos to 1943; Ries Mulder was interned by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 (source (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ries_Mulder)), and Astri Wright places Kerton's study with Dutch teachers in the 1930s (1994 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/sudjana-kerton-recorded-history-of-modern-indonesia-1447893297)). - **Pelukis Rakyat.** The biodata gives 1946 for his membership; the group was founded in Yogyakarta in 1947 (source (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelukis_Rakjat)). In January 1947 he exhibited in Yogyakarta with the Bandung painters Barli and Kustiwa. - **Patriot.** The biodata dates his work for the paper 1944–50; *Patriot*, the paper Usmar Ismail founded and edited, belongs to the years of the Revolution, which began in August 1945. - **"The first Indonesian artist sent to Europe."** The biodata's phrase; Agus and Otto Djaya had reached Amsterdam in 1947, and Barli travelled under the same 1950 Sticusa invitation. "Among the first" is the safer reading. - **Amsterdam or Santiniketan.** The biodata says he chose Amsterdam over Tagore's university; a Dutch report of January 1950 describes a plan to study in Europe first and then at Santiniketan (*Java-bode* (http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010865657:mpeg21:a0128:ocr)). - **The Art Students League.** The biodata gives 1952–55; he was in New York by September 1951, and the biodata itself records his 1951 choice of the League. - **The Lone Wolf (2006–07).** kertonart.com calls it his first one-man show in the United States; the biodata lists earlier American solo exhibitions in 1960, 1964 and 1975. The Honolulu exhibition opened twelve years after his death. - **The 1997 theft.** Its scale is described differently by the estate ("the largest art theft in the history of modern art") and by critics at the time (the largest theft of a single artist's works in one incident). The Jakarta Post's list of 13 February 1997 agrees with the estate's captions for sixteen of the nineteen works; for *Man from Suriname* it gives 46 × 55 cm (caption 46 × 50), for *Mt. Merapi* 69 × 96 cm (caption 69 × 98) and for *Fond Love* 1983 (caption 1982). - **Age at death.** Some press reports give 72; born 22 November 1922 and died 6 April 1994, he was 71. - **Still to be documented.** The formal names of the 1979 and 1999 awards; the Art Students League lifetime membership; UNICEF's 1964 card record; whether the watercolour *Tanah Airku* (SK-P0078) is connected with the Hague mural of the same title. ## Works (87) One block per catalogue entry, in catalogue-number order. ### SK-P0001 — Abstract I - Classification: Painting - Date: 1952 - Place made: New York - Medium: Oil on canvas - Dimensions: 72.7 × 66 cm (as captioned) - Location: Not recorded - Provenance: Listed in the estate’s online gallery (kertonart.com, “ON DISPLAY”, retrieved 7 July 2026); ownership to be confirmed with the estate. - Note: Estate caption (kertonart.com gallery): “New York, 1952 / Oil on canvas / 72.7 cm x 66 cm”. The theft was reported to the Bandung police, whose special team worked with the Jakarta police and Interpol (*The Jakarta Post*, 6 February 1997 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/19-paintings-stolen-from-art-gallery-1447893297)); a week later the paper published the list of the nineteen works with their dates and sizes (*The Jakarta Post*, 13 February 1997 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/the-list-of-sudjana-kerton-paintings-stolen-on-sunday-night-feb-2-1997-1447893297)). Critics at the time called it the largest theft of a single artist's works in one incident (Amir Sidharta, 1997 (https://jawawa.id/newsitem/stolen-paintings-reflect-kertons-career-1447893297)); the estate's own history describes it as "the largest art theft in the history of modern art" (kertonart.com (https://www.kertonart.com/history)). The estate's website lists all nineteen as stolen and still missing. In December 2025 Tjandra Kerton said that some have since come back, though not all have been found (*Kompas*, 22 December 2025 (https://www.kompas.id/artikel/rindu-mata-dan-ingatan-pelukis-sudjana-kerton-untuk-bandung)). Which works, and where they are now, has not yet been published, so every painting remains on this register until the estate confirms its recovery; a recovered work will be marked as such and kept visible. Each register entry is a full catalogue entry flagged **STOLEN**, with its image, date, medium and dimensions, so that it remains visible to the trade, to auction houses and to researchers — the documentation that makes stolen works hard to sell and possible to recover. **Authorised reproductions.** The estate has issued authorised limited-edition giclée reproductions of some of the stolen paintings, among them *Gunung Merapi* and *Fond Love*. Each register entry records the original: an oil on canvas, with its dimensions. If you have information about any of these works, contact the estate via kertonart.com/contact (https://www.kertonart.com/contact). This register is documentation, not a legal instrument; it does not replace police records or loss-register listings. The fair’s announcement named him first among the pioneering modern Indonesian figures on show, with S. Sudjojono, Mochtar Apin, Gregorius Sidharta, Made Wianta and Jeihan Sukmantoro. Tjandra Kerton described the family’s selection as oils, lithographs, etchings and sketches from the 1950s to the 1980s (Prestige, April 2026). Type: tribute. She describes a deliberate painter who composed each canvas in pencil or charcoal before adding oil — a work “had to be intellectually considered” — and who was, by design, less prolific than contemporaries such as Affandi or Hendra Gunawan. She recounts the origin of a recurring motif, the water buffalo with a bird on its back, in childhood visits to the rice fields of South Bandung with his uncle, and a series of three Sisingaan paintings she suggested when he felt blocked. Kerton photographed, titled and recorded every painting; after his death in 1994 she and her mother took on the stewardship of his legacy, and her mother turned his records into a detailed inventory of the collection. Built around Kerton’s pen-and-ink sketches of Bandung from 1947–49 and a selection of his prints — among them the lithograph Kampung and the woodcuts Panen and Kuda Lumping — it retraced the city that formed him. Completeness is never claimed. **What an entry asserts.** Inclusion records that a work is *documented* in a named source; every entry carries its source references and a dated revision history. Inclusion is not an authentication (see the Disclaimer). **Dates, media and dimensions.** For each work the estate's online gallery captions the place and year it was made, its medium and its dimensions. These are transcribed as the estate's statements, and each entry quotes the caption verbatim. Classification follows the captioned medium. The captions do not give height and width in a consistent order — compared with the estate's own photographs, some give height first and some width — so dimensions are shown *as captioned* until the works are measured. **Numbering.** `SK-{P|W|PR|S|M}####`, assigned once and stable forever. Numbers were assigned when the works were first catalogued, before the captions were transcribed, so some prints and works on paper carry `SK-P` numbers; reclassification never changes a catalogue number. **Every change is on the record.** Each addition, correction and publication is written to a hash-chained ledger that cannot be altered without detection (see the Ledger). Corrections name their reason and source. **Images.** Works are reproduced here by permission of the Kerton estate, which retains all legal rights to its images; each entry also links to kertonart.com. **No prices.** The catalogue carries no valuations and no market data. ## How to cite this catalogue Cite individual entries using the copyable citation on each work page, in the form: > “Title” (date), cat. no. SK-P0001, in *Sudjana Kerton: Digital Catalogue Raisonné*, /works/SK-P0001. Entry revised 7 July 2026. Living document; subject to revision. Entries are versioned; always quote the revision date shown at the time of citation. ## Disclaimer Inclusion in this catalogue is a scholarly cataloguing decision. It does not constitute an authentication or a guarantee of authenticity, attribution, or provenance, and the catalogue does not provide valuations. ## Open research questions What the catalogue does not yet know — the agenda for estate and university research. - Dates: 2 of 87 works are not yet dated. - Media: 0 of 87 works have no recorded medium (classification is provisional). - Dimensions: 2 of 87 works have no recorded dimensions. - The 1997 theft: the family reported in December 2025 that some stolen works have come back; which ones, police and loss-register references await the estate. - Dimensions: the estate captions give height and width in no consistent order; measurement will settle each work. - Exhibition checklists: which catalogued works were shown in which exhibitions is not yet linked. ## Provenance of this file Generated 2026-10-02T14:26:16.130Z from the catalogue's live record.
